5 Mistakes New Car Owners Make

For a lot of people, buying a new car is an exciting time. They can finally go where they want without begging someone for a ride. However, new car owners often make the same five mistakes. Far too often, this leads to a slew of issues, which are either minor or major.

Fortunately, people can avoid making these mistakes simply by knowing what they are. If you plan to purchase a new vehicle or you recently have, take a few minutes to go over this information. Ultimately, it could save you a lot of frustration and money.

1.     Not Getting the Oil Changed

Amazingly, a lot of drivers never think twice about the maintenance their vehicle requires. At the top of the list is having the oil changed. All vehicles have some kind of indicator that lets drivers know it is time to have the oil changed. Instead of ignoring it, schedule an appointment at a trusted automotive shop within a few days.

Most vehicles require an oil change every 5,000 miles. However, many professional mechanics suggest that people have this done every 3,000 miles instead. The oil is what lubricates moving parts within the engine compartment. So, if a vehicle runs low or runs completely out, the engine could stop. At that point, there is a good chance the car needs a new engine, which is incredibly expensive.

Also, learn the exact type of oil your specific vehicle uses. Yes, most mechanics know what to use, but some think all oil is the same. Putting synthetic oil into a car that requires standard oil and vice versa can cause serious problems.

2.     Not Checking the Tire Pressure

Newer automobiles have warning signals that let drivers know one or more tires need air. However, this is not always an option for older vehicles. So, it is a good idea to have the air in your tires checked at least once a month. This is especially important before going on a long road trip. Also, have the air checked more frequently during the extremely cold winter and hot summer months since the temperature can alter the pressure.

3.     Not Becoming Familiar With the Vehicle

Especially on a new car, you want to take some time to become thoroughly familiar with every feature. While some features enhance the interior climate, adjust stereo sounds, and position the seats just right, others play a more critical role in the operation of the car. At the time of purchase, the salesperson should give you a manual from the manufacturer. Inside, you can read all about your new car, what it has, and what it does.

4.     Not Learning How to Change a Flat Tire

If there is one thing that every car owner should know it is how to properly change a flat tire. Sure, you could call for roadside service, but what happens if you end up in an isolated area where no one can get to you? Make sure you have an inflated extra tire in excellent condition. Also, you will need to keep tire-changing tools in your vehicle. Of all skills an individual should have, this is among the most critical.

5.     Getting the Wrong Insurance Coverage

As a new car owner, you want to protect it, as well as yourself, other people, and properties. The way to do that is by having the right type of car insurance, as well as coverage level. Surprisingly, many drivers do not have adequate protection.

Before driving your new vehicle anywhere, the law requires you to have insurance. However, before buying just any policy, you want to consider several factors. Obviously, you need excellent coverage, but that does not mean you have to spend a lot of money. There are discounts available to reduce the premiums on your car insurance. For this, there are two things you can do.

First, request quotes online from several reputable insurance companies. That way, you can compare what each has to offer, including discounts, and then select the one that best matches your criteria. Second, ask close family members and friends for recommendations. Someone satisfied with their car insurance can provide you with the name of their agent. From there, you can schedule a time to ask questions and discuss all your options.

You want to enjoy your new car for a long time instead of deal with problems that arise. Fortunately, you can do that by making a few simple yet smart decisions.
